Below the Surface

Jon is checking out the western-most newt ponds, now approaching their third birthday. As with the other ponds at Folly Farmyard, life in and around them has increased since they were formed and is flourishing with both flora and forna, including some handsome nursery web spiders (Pisaura mirabilis)! Several species of dragonflies have been spotted (skimmers, hawkers and darters), perhaps six, along with three species of damsels (reds, emeralds and blues). In addition, as one would expect there is a significant number of aquatic bug species too, including water boatmen (very numerous), whirligig beetles and skaters. Also below the surface there has been a healthy number of tadpoles and a thriving population of newts – most likely smooth (Lissotriton vulgaris).
